“The mission of the New Jersey State Opera is
to present the finest operatic performances
possible to the people of New Jersey and the
region, to educate the public to a love and
appreciation of the art form, and to offer a
programming alternative to the opera
productions presented by other major companies
in our area.”
What distinguishes the New Jersey State Opera
from all other organizations, both in-state
and those who tour from other areas, is its
dedication to bringing full-scale grand
opera to the citizens of New Jersey –
using only
full orchestra, full chorus, original language performances with supertitles,
singers of international stature, promising
young American artists, and performances whose
production values will stand comparison with
those of any leading regional opera company in
the country.
This mission is achieved primarily through
presenting both traditional and innovative
operas in the New Jersey Performing Arts
Center, Newark, NJ and other venues in the
state, and by offering education and out-reach
programs of the highest professional quality.
The opera’s aim is to create exciting,
innovative seasons with the potential to
generate statewide, and regional interest. We
look for ideas that will bring enjoyment and
enrichment to its current audiences and will
also attract persons who don’t usually attend
opera performances. New Jersey State Opera
also presents events and activities that
encourage musical neophytes and help debunk
the elitist image of opera – a misperception
that keeps away potential audience members.
